Temporary Site Installations in Downtown Pittsburgh

Seasons in Spiral

Seasons in Spiral

There have been a couple really interesting installations in Downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District, at the intersection of 7th and Penn. Here’s a link to a site with information about past installations. Alexandyr Brodsky’s PALAZZO NUDO (day and night experience) and Takamasa Kuniyasu’s SEASON IN SPIRAL (over time) were particularly compelling.

Liza’s proposal for Flagstaff Hill made me think of Kuniyasu’s work especially. You could walk inside the spiral, which was made of timber, and become completely immersed. The sculpture was temporary – in this case, for 3 years. It was meant to be experienced over time, during different seasons, etc.

Agreed. It is sometimes frustrating when trying to find images of temporary, site-specific pieces. You can find images of other spiral sculptures/landscapes by Takamasa Kuniyasu on line – the Spiral of Töölönlahti Bay, and Dragon Spiral for example, made of 100 year old Chinese bricks and Korean wood.
